A Catwellness.org Update: Clarification on Holiday Dangers to Cats

Yesterday we sent out some information about holiday dangers to cats. We're glad to know you are reading our posts as several veterinarians commented on the information. As a result, we referenced the ASPCA Poison Control Center, (http://www.aspca.org/pet-care/poison-control/) for the following:

-- While poinsettia's can irritate the mouth and stomach of your cat, lilies are even more toxic and ingestion of even a very small amount can result in kidney failure in your cat.

-- Chocolate is never good for a cat to eat. However, dark chocolate is far more dangerous because of its high levels of methylxanthines.

Finally, our good friend Dr. Marty Becker, Good Morning America commentator, (http://www.drmartybecker.com/) says that if the stress of the holidays does become too much for your cat to handle, try synthetic pheromones, such as Feliway (http://www.feliway.com/us).
